What Country Stories Teach Us About Risk and Protection

Over the coming months, the Global Inclusive Insurance Facility (GIIF) will launch a new series of briefing notes designed to offer fresh insights into its work around the world. These notes will come in two forms: Country Profiles, spotlighting where GIIF has been actively expanding access to agricultural index insurance, and Thematic or Regional Briefings, focusing on broader themes like capacity building, stakeholder collaboration, and GIIF’s involvement in sector-wide initiatives. Drawing on farmer testimonials, highlights from key events, technical assistance summaries, and client interviews, this series aims to share practical lessons and real-world impact from the ground up.

1. Country-Specific Briefing Notes: These notes will spotlight GIIF’s activities, roles, and achievements in specific markets. They will cover:

  • Each country's relevance to GIIF’s broader strategy
  • Key partnerships and project milestones
  • Next steps and future opportunities

Selected countries will include: Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria and Senegal in Africa, as well as Indonesia, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka in Asia, among others.

Several countries that are already part of the Global Shield against Climate Risks, and their profiles will highlight GIIF’s collaboration within that initiative.

2. Thematic/Regional Briefing Notes: These briefings will explore GIIF’s role in market development, with a focus on:

  • Strengthening technical capacity among local (re)insurers.
  • Enhancing regulatory frameworks
  • Increasing insurance uptake and improving beneficiary awareness

Countries featured in these thematic notes will include: Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, India, and Pakistan, among several others.

These may also reflect GIIF’s work in broader capacity building and collaboration efforts.

3. Purpose and Audience: Beyond documenting GIIF’s work and impact, these briefing notes are designed as guidance tools to support future engagement in these markets. They aim to:

  • Inform current and potential clients about the state of climate-related insurance
  • Highlight opportunities for investment, collaboration, and training
  • Serve as a concise reference for colleagues and practitioners involved in climate insurance initiatives

The ultimate goal is to share knowledge and practical insights that can shape ongoing and future efforts in climate risk insurance.
